O3 - Migrating from Data Mart Chaos
Many companies began building their strategic decision support environments by implementing a small data mart as a proof of concept. While certainly an advisable method to prove the value of these DSS applications, the situation has arisen in which a plethora of data marts, in the absence of a solid data warehouse architecture, has resulted in a chaotic, unintegrated decision support environment rather than the dream that was promised. This seminar will discuss the pros and cons of the data mart only architecture, a comparison of the data mart versus full data warehouse architecture, and the mechanisms to migrate from the "stovepipe" data marts to a truly integrated, corporate-wide data warehouse architecture.
Key Objectives
- Understand the characteristics and implications of the data mart chaos
- Understand alternative paths for migrating to the architected environment
- Understand how to use data models to achieve the migration
- Recognize political and technical issues
- Learn about available tools to aid in the migration
